Seattle — April 2, 2026 — Climate Pledge Arena, Amazon and the Seattle Aquarium today announced that they have joined Seattle City Light’s Renewable Plus energy program long-term agreement securing a new renewable energy development in the Pacific Northwest.
This makes Climate Pledge Arena the region’s first venue to use this model to expand our clean energy supply.
The agreement enables Seattle City Light to invest in new solar resources that add renewable electricity to the regional power grid. While the venues are not physically connected to the solar facility, Seattle City Light will retire Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) on behalf of Amazon, the Seattle Aquarium and Climate Pledge Arena, based on each organization’s annual electricity consumption.
In 2025, Climate Pledge Arena committed to being one of the first commercial clients of Seattle City Light’s Renewable Plus Program.
This supports Climate Pledge Arena’s mission to operate as the world’s sustainable arena. By committing its large, long-term energy demand to new renewable development, the Arena helps accelerate clean energy infrastructure in the Pacific Northwest and demonstrate how major venues can play a meaningful role in advancing the energy transition.

What We’re Doing
Climate Pledge Arena has entered into a long-term agreement with Seattle City Light to join its Renewable Plus program to support the development of new renewable energy in the Pacific Northwest. This makes the Arena the first in the region to use this model to help expand clean energy supply.
How It Works
Through this agreement, Seattle City Light is able to invest in new solar resources that deliver renewable electricity to the regional power grid. The Arena is not physically connected to the solar facility; instead, Seattle City Light tracks how much renewable energy is generated and retires Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) on the Arena’s behalf based on the Arena’s annual electricity use.
Why This Matters
This approach ensures the Arena is contributing to the creation of new renewable energy, rather than simply purchasing existing clean power. It directly supports additional clean energy on the grid, helping accelerate the transition to a low-carbon energy system in the Pacific Northwest.
The new solar projects located in Central Oregon cover approximately 400 acres or 1,060 NHL hockey rinks. The 87 MW of renewable energy provides the equivalent resources needed to power 24,000 Seattle homes annually.
Seattle City Light recently celebrated 20 years of net carbon neutrality with its power mix of hydropower, wind, and solar energy resources. The Renewable Plus program helps customers meet stronger sustainability goals by adding new renewable resources
to the regional energy grid. In return, they receive renewable energy credits (RECs) that City Light tracks and retires on their behalf, providing verified proof of their environmental impact.
